What does it take to make a good game?
There is never an end when it comes to games. There is always a new game each year. This 2020 for instance, a new game called Cyberpunk 2077 has been recently released. Cyberpunk 2077 is basically about cyberpunk world. However, this game received a lot of criticism two days after it was released. Another game about soccer (FIFA series) is always the same each year.

Every gamer may like different kinds of games. I personally like an adventure game and some players like MOBA love racing games. But all gamers really love one game…it’s the best game. No….that’s not the title, but the quality of the game.

Let’s go a few years back! In 2013 Naughty Dog released a game called The Last of Us which tells a story about a father who loses his daughter in a zombie apocalypse. This game causes an uproar because it is very interesting.
Why is it an interesting game? Because it tells you a touching story which the character actually acts if it is the true apocalypse. The insanity of the character, the instant abandonment of the world, even the movement of the character all contribute to make it an unforgettable game.

Next, take a look at this game, God of War. In 2018, Santa Monica Studio released a game called God of War which is the next series after Kratos, the main character starts a new life in Nordic world. Thor (not Chris Hemsworth) goes looking for the last of the giant kin. The art style, the story and again, the smooth movement of the character make the Game of The Year worthy of receiving an award.

But what we need to learn from those great-smooth-movement game is how they make those movements so smooth that looks like those of real humans. The secret is Motion Capture or a lot of us call mocap. So…what is motion capture? Motion capture is the process of recording the movement of objects or people. It is used in military, entertainment, sports, medical applications, and for validation of computer vision and robotics. In filmmaking and video game development, it refers to recording the action of human actors, and using that information to animate digital character models in 2D or 3D computer animation. When it includes face and fingers or captures subtle expressions, it is often referred to as performance capture. In many fields, motion capture is sometimes called motion tracking, but in filmmaking and games, motion tracking usually refers more to match moving.

How does this work ? Basically the actor will use a suit called mocap suit full of dots. On the other side, there is a camera rolling and capturing movement of the actor by tracking those dots and later the animator will combine it with a 3D model. For example, look at this picture.

Well mocap has been used widely recently, for example in The Last of Us, God of War, Persona 5, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt, The Hobbit (Smaug by Benedict Cumberbatch), Grand Theft Auto Series, Uncharted series, Detroit: Become Human, and many more.
